Tasmania (Tassie) is the southern island state of Australia, often stunningly beautiful, with diverse landscapes and unique fauna. (Tassie Devils)
A 12,000+ km road trip from Queensland (QLD) was always going to be ambitious, especially in these Covid times where state borders get shut within a days notice.
So with pre-planning but next to nothing booked, once the Melbourne (VIC) 5 day snap lockdown was lifted, I quickly set an agenda to drive through New South Wales (NSW) to the Spirit of Tasmania, taking my car to the Apple Isle (Tassie), with a loose plan to visit (SA) South Australia’s wine districts on the return trip, border permissions dependent.
As I sort through thousands of photos, todays blog is a taste of things to come, organising my thoughts into the broad categories of
- Old World Accommodations’ (100yr+)
- Critters
- Walks
- Waterfalls
- Caves
- Tours for Day Cruises & Other Tours
- Lookouts
- Motor Museums
- Silo Arts & Roadside stops
I will post a separate blog for each of these in the coming days/weeks, but for now..
Tassie is rich with old world charms, giving rise to many BNB options in heritage and National Trust accomodations. The surprise and highlight of the stays however came near the Grampians in Victoria, in the historic house of Narrapumelap (more coming soon)
Tasmania features some famous walks, like the Cradle Mountain Overland Track, and the 3 Capes Walk in the stunningly beautiful Freycinet National Park. Whilst these remain on the bucket list for now, 2 hrs around Dove Lake was a highlight short walk.
Show Caves also feature highly in Tassie, and with some in SA & NSW along route, it became a theme of its own.
Platypus in Tasmania are much larger than their far north QLD counterparts, and my first park visit coming off the boat encountered one.
Add Wombats, Tassie Devils, Seals and Little Penguins that were living in my Bicheno AirBNB’s front yard, and there are some great photos to share
Such a roadtrip is all about experiences, and along the way I got haunted at a Ghost Tour, had too much fun in Freycinet quad biking, Segwayed through forestry and got onto the waters a number of times up rivers and into the southern ocean.
Waterfalls will feature again, a great way to engage a walk and get into the natural beauty of Tasmania.
Then finally, solo driving such a long trip requires lots of breaks, so I scour the intended routes for places of interest to stop, revive and survive the journey.
I have literally been “Beyond The Black Stump“, here’s the proof 🙂
The increase in Silo Arts in Australia made for a welcome theme to what will be the wrap up of this adventure.
More soon !
WILT – What I am listening to ?
Don’t try to read too much into these WILT’s, it’s often just that earworm from my music library
