Whilst in Europe over winter, I had to experience skiing this region. After reviewing many options, St Anton am Arlberg was chosen, for the variety of ski fields and large connected lift ticket, along with easy accesability by train. The Tyrolean experience also appealed.
A weather front over Europe had held off snow over Xmas & New Years, but a metre of snow in the 4 days prior to arriving made all the difference. Again, no one can guarantee weather, and travellers should embrace whatever they experience.
For me, this meant good primary surfaces, and the majority of the resort, runs and lifts open, and while there was a couple more days after arrival of minor snow fall, it changed to blue sky & sunshine for remainder of the 2 weeks.
Skiers love blue sky, but normally mixed with fresh snow falls along the way to keep up surfaces. So things got “ordinary” towards the end, but the resort did an excellent job with keeping up piste grooming & moving snow around to make the conditions as good as they could be under the circumstances.
I had booked this very early in the scope of this 6 months of travel, securing a very good rate for a single room at Haus Gamberg; hosted by the delightful Brigette. Great location, very comfortable room, excellent breakfasts and a truly caring host.
The ski map for the area is as difficult to understand as most; until you have gotten on the mountain and worked out proximities and connections. In particular, if you are staying in St Anton, and want to Ski Lech, this is a bit more challenging than first expected. I have detailed here what I experienced. I hope it helps 🙂
