If you google Christmas Markets, there is an often famous photo of the massive Striezelmarkt in Dresden. (photo to the right by others). So what better way to start my German leg of this journey, heading south to Salzburg for Christmas, than a short train ride from my Decin Castle stay, to Dresden.
I had an Airbnb near the HBF, with Christmas markets below, and as I made my way to the Elbe river, it was nearly one market after another.
Being here for a weekend, with only a couple of weeks before Christmas to go, the crowds were a bit much. Understandable, but warranted finding other things to do and avoid the peak periods for market goers.
Dresden Castle became a simple choice. I normally allow an hour or so for most castle visits, but this one required much more time. A stunning collection, with a separate (entry time) ticket required for the Historic Green Vault. 4 hours later…
But the surprise visit in Dresden, was the Cabinet of Mathematical Instruments Museum; filled with wonderous time pieces, telescopes, surveying equipment and astrological monitors.
I plan on posting a separate Christmas Markets Wrap-up on Christmas Eve, but there is a quick example of Striezelmarkt below
And when in Dresden, you need to visit the most Beautiful Milk Bar / Cheese shop.
