Travel The Bucket List

Iceland – Husavik & Whale Watching

Husavik was accessed from another long dirt road connecting to the Nature Baths. I think I could have headed west first and taken pavement all the way, but I was driving that the next day and wanted the variety of scenery.

Husavik itself is a very nice little fishing village, with 4 whale & puffin watching operators offering a bit of variety. Puffin season was over mid August, but the humpbacks were still playing.

With prior whale watching experience in Australia, there is nothing to compare being on a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) instead of a slow reacting ship. The RIB is not only more fun, but tends to ride any potential rough seas better, reducing that likelihood of nausea or sea sickness.  Upon sighting a whale, they can reach very fast to get to the mammal, maximising the experience.

BTW, the waters off Husavik were very clean, making the viewing all the more enjoyable. This too was a highlight of my time in Iceland.

A couple on the boat who arrived late into Husavik the night before, had a northern lights experience about 10 minutes out of town. A brief break in the clouds, a decent SLR and a local to help set the camera up for capturing, and they showed me some very good shots of this bucket list phenonimum.
