What a Spectacular ! The YiPeng Lantern Festival is held during the full moon in November each year, in conjunction with Loy Krathong. Simply put, YiPeng launches lanterns into the sky and Loy Krathong launches floating florals into the waters as part of wonderful cultural events.
This year, the celebration was held over the 14th to 16th November, and based on the crowds and accents heard, attracts people from all over the world to Thailand.
The photos & videos below will give you a short impression of a quite extended experience.
For those considering attending, there are pages of Need to Know, but the key points include
- Chiang Mai is only one place to enjoy, and there are free and organised areas to view from
- All Lantern launches are well out of town to minimise disruptions to air traffic (planes)
- Seats at the back have a far more panoramic view of the launches
- There are quite a few Tour Operators who offer different packages & seats for the same location.
- Yes, some lanterns catch fire before launch, so maintain surroundings awareness
Delighted to tick this one off The Bucket List, and won’t say no to revisiting 🙂
