Making my way to Val d’Isere, the epic Chamonix required a stop. Unplanned was discovering the train from Verbier included the Mont Blanc Express, a very picturesque journey. (photos below)
But as you can see (right), not much snow late January this year. Daily positive temps, no fresh snow for a week, and the occasional rain made the surfaces icy and challenging. ie, not much fun
At the end of Chamonix valley, I made my base in the quieter village of Les Houches, home to the famous la Verte des Houches downhill run, and hosting the 2024 Kandahar World Ski Cup
I looked forward to doing the famous run, not aware the world cup was being staged there this year. Accordingly, the run was quartered off for contestants, only to be cancelled due to poor conditions 🙁
The Kandahar Slalom will go ahead, but not ideal.
So that’s travel for you. Unpredictable weather; but you make the most of every day you’re upright (skiing pun). I got in about 60km of skiing/(ice skating), and the upside of warm weather was some beautiful sunshine days & vistas.
With the township of Chamonix a simple bus ride up the valley, a couple of afternoons exploring became the pivot, while finalising plans for skiing Val d’Isere.
