Time to embrace the more authentic Japan
To get past the standard Tokyo Kyoto Osaka visit, adding Gero, Nara, Kawazu and Hakone allowed for a touch of less touristy adventures.
The outdoor Onsen at Suimeikan in Gero was the highlight of onsens visited. Many potential alternatives were not as convenient to access by train; but a return trip with a car hire will make that far more enjoyable.
Nara’s bowing deers are delightful, when not nipping or head-butting you for attention.
Kawazu has a 3.6km riverwalk of Cherry Blossom trees. No doubt epic if I had been there 3 weeks earlier, LOL
Hakone was a surprise. Many Mt Fuji viewpoints, along with active volcanic fissures, a beautiful lake, beaches nearby and many many onsen hotel options.
