Chamonix to Val d’Isere is not far as the crow flys, but about 7hrs on trains going around the Alps.
To break up the journey, Annecy and it’s stunning lake are a near perfect half-way point. It’s what you do, roll with the circumstances and take in the beauty when it’s unexpected.
Lac Annecy would have to be the cleanest waters I have seen in decades. It is promoted as the Venice of France, with fast flowing canals through the old town; with equally crystal clear waters.
Also famous for Le Palais de I’ile below. An iconic mid-canal ships bow-shaped building / fortress / prison / court house in times past
