Travel The Bucket List

Singapore Xmas 2013

Raffles XmasSingapore is one of the cleanest cities I’ve visited. A Christmas vacation had us staying near Raffles, a beautiful old world Hotel. My bucket list includes staying at Raffles sometime.

Hard not to stop by The Long Bar for a Singapore Sling when nearby, and on this occasion, the table centre piece was promoting a lavish Christmas smorgasboard for booking. Pricey, yes, Bucket List worthy ? absolutely !

Fresh seafood, Lobster, variety of Oysters, meats, salads, deserts and bottomless champagne or Slings; it did not disappoint.

Singapore is known for many things, a vibrant business hub, one of the top cities attracting expatriates, shopping & attractions.

We took in Gardens by The Bay & the Flower Dome, which is integrated with the OCBC Skywalk. A relaxing way to spend a few hours, and quite visual at night.

A bus trip to Singapore Zoo & the adjacent River Safari also made a great day out. They are truly world class and worth the visit for all ages. Having a fid in my family (feathered kid), Jurong Bird Park is worth a couple of hours, but I will admit it is looking tired.

Sentosa Island has developed significantly over the years, and now incorporates many attractions. Of note, Universal Studio’s & the S.E.A Aquarium. Crowds can be overwhelming at times, so plan appropriately.

Orchard Rd is the main shopping street, and it is literally lined with thousands of shops in multi story centres, from bargain booths, to the highest end fashion.

For a more cultural experience, Little India, Arab Street and Chinatown are short cab rides from the city heart, with different shopping & food opportunities.

Tips:

Taxi’s are inexpensive, so if you don’t want to walk everywhere, you can jump into some air conditioning to get where you want to go.

Book the Singapore Zoo online or get there early (9am). Ticket queues can be horrendous by mid morning, and getting a seat on the River Safari ride also requires securing early.

Consider buying a Universal Express Pass to get around the rides at Universal Studio’s quicker. The queues can be very long, and combine that with Singapore’s heat & humidity……..

Money Changers are everywhere, and competitive. If you want $sing, only get enough from your hometown to get you by first day, then walk the arcades or shops and compare the money changers for your best rate. I found the local Singapore exchange was a far better rate than anything offered back home in Australia.

Singapore has loads of wonderful sites, a few are below by example.
