I went with 2 AirBNB bookings for my stay in Bergan. One of the way in, and one on the way out.
When you don’t know a place at all, researching the best location to stay can be a challenge. AirBNB don’t make that any easier with their “flagged locations” rarely being very close to reality; but in this case, my 1st night in Bergan was directly above the harbour and old town; a brilliant location. Perhaps I was just lucky, but my AirBNB host, Jessica, was a delight to stay with, and had penthouse views of the town.
So, I step across the road, down some stairs, and within a few seconds, Bryggen hits you. First thought was, did Popeye live here ? (ok just showed my age) Bryggen as I understand it, is a collection of very old buildings on the wharf area; and they are very original as you will see by the photos below.
Someone is going to say they are dangerous, all leaning and crooked, uneven floors and trip hazards; or the adventurer will appreciate the unfettered history. The ravages of time. But before the Fun Police change it or modernise/sterilise, you can walk the uneven planks, smell the timbers; and immerse yourself in a way of life lost to most.
Bryggen has a few lovely restaurants and pubs, and a few gift shops etc. Walk the alleys up & down, climb some stairs and wander along the verandahs; and be thankful such an experience still exists. It’s a lovely way to spend some time in Bergan
WILT – What I am listening to ?
Don’t try to read too much into these WILT’s, it’s often just that earworm from my music library
