Travel The Bucket List

Ireland Rock of Cashel

Second day of driving south from Dublin, after an overnight in Kilkenny, was a visit to the Rock of Cashel.

This impressive site is essentially a vantage spot, high upon the Rock of Cashel, featuring the remnants of a variety of medieval buildings, chapel, round tower, cathedral & more.

Entry was accepted under the OPW card, so it only required a small fee to park the car. Climb a manageable hill and enter to find sensational views of the landscape (subject to weather of course).

Regular guided tours are available as part of the entry cost, and worth attending to assist understanding the history of this site.

So there I was, standing waiting for a guided tour, when a familiar face arose, my new friends from Dublin Castle. Further chats around the tour and sharing what was planned for the days ahead, made a promise to catch up in Dingle.

I mention elsewhere, the journey can often be more fulfilling than the destinations; and travelling solo, there are times you enjoy the solitude, and times where the conversations you engage with others, become the highlighted memories of the trip.

Solo travel is what you make of it. You can keep to yourself, but if you want to embrace a local culture, learn about others reason for being somewhere or their passions, you have to put yourself out there. Inspiration rarely comes from sitting in a room by yourself.
