Day 7 Heading West.
Coming out of Husavik, the rain set in, and a stop at Godafoss became quite short. I continued on to Blonduos for the night, a mid point on the way to the West Fjords.
Next morning, I took the northern Fjords drive, via Holmavik to see the Witchcraft and Sorcery Museum. Aside from the occasionally bizarre content, the displays themselves were as professionally presented as I have seen anywhere. They handed me a guidebook in English to follow the story, and I must say, it was a fascinating hour.
They also have a café and free wifi, so take a rest and enjoy the hospitality.
Numerous fjords and mountain peak vistas later, I came across the town of Ísafjörður. Around the centre of town, is a noticeably charming old world building, with signs out from welcoming visitors.
Worked out, this building was an old Hospital, which has been converted now into a library and piece of history, with a room of local art. Free to visit, this was a very nice surprise and a fascinating glimpse into the past of Ísafjörður.
Last stop of the day was Sudureyri for the night in the Comfy Guesthouse. How appropriately named. Rooms were modern and spacious, breakfast was very good, and the hosts were eager to please.
The access to this town was through a very long and intriguing tunnel. Mostly one lane, with regular sections were you could pull over for oncoming traffic.
Day 8. Heading to Grundarfjordur, the next attraction for this time of year was the Dynjandi Falls on the way to the Brjanslaekur to cross the bay. I say this “time of year” as during Puffin season till mid august, just west of this is a nesting cliff that is very popular to visit. Oh well, next time
As you come around the fjord, this impressive waterfall can be seen for miles. A Cruise ship was parked in the bay nearby, obviously ferrying passengers to see this remarkable natural site.
As more of a climb is needed to get to the top of these falls, and as this was a steadily raining day, I chose to only venture about half way, still enough to get a solid appreciation for this natural wonder.
Arriving in time for the noon ferry crossing, the rain persisted, diminishing the potential views during the crossing, but did see many islands along the way, with a brief stop at Flatley
Once across, I drove through my place of accommodation for the night, and visited Kirkjufellsfoss. Not as impressive as other waterfalls, and not helped with the weather, but that’s travel. Any clear day is a blessing, no one can guarantee good weather in your travels.
WILT – What I am listening to ?
Don’t try to read too much into these WILT’s, it’s often just that earworm from my music library
