Before arriving at Vik from Reykjavik, there is a turn off to an interesting beach, a Black Beach, but it’s not really sand, more smooth rocks and pebbles with a mix of volcanic gravel.
Equally remarkable is the ferocity of the surf breaking so close to the shore.
The diversion is a short few minutes to a free car park with a Cafe and rest rooms. A sort walk from the car park puts you on this remarkable beach. It’s well worth the diversion
A beach, yes, sand, not really. More black rocks & pebbles, along with crush; but all striking just the same.
On the day I arrived, the surf was thundering, a very large break, very close to the beach; quite a dramatic view.
Tide was low enough to walk around the cliff face, between waves if timed right. A very interesting stop while heading east.
The Black Beach has a restaurant/café, and if you buy something, the wifi is free and so are the bathrooms. Bathrooms outside have to be paid for, from a ticketing machine that will take coin or credit card
