As mentioned elsewhere, the Travel side of the internet often posts and re-posts certain photos; inspiring a wanderlust to travel.

Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Disney’s Magic Kingdom is one of those photo’s.

So off to Fussen to stay 2 nights to do a day trip to this and Hohenschwangau Castle, the hunting lodge for the royal family.

Firstly, book in advance, this is a popular site even off season.

Regular buses run from Fussen to nearby Hohenschwangau, where you collect your tickets to visit one or both Castles, and an option of The Bavarian Kings. I only booked the 2 castles.

Hohenschwangau Castle is closest to the ticket booth, and a not too difficult 10-15minute walk up a winding staircase to the Castle where await your tour numbered entry time. No photos permited inside, so sorry, nothing to blog with there; but Hohenschwangau Castle was interesting as it was lived in.

Tour over, make your way down into the village again, and then choose from a long walk, a bus and walk, or a horse drawn carriage and shorter walk to reach Neuschwanstein Castle.

The famous photo’s are taken from the Marienbuckle, or bridge nearby (photos below) which provide a commanding view of the castle and backdrop; but you will see from the photo, it’s crowded. The planks on the bridge also bow and so if you have any concern of heights and alike, this is one to approach cautiously. I have no doubt it’s safe, but it can get your phobias going.

Back to Neuschwanstein castle entry to await scheduled guided tour time, and you embark into King Ludwig’s endulgence for castle making; which was only a fraction completed before his untimely death.

It becomes a long day out, but weather permitting, a rewarding day of unique views and discoveries, albeit a bit rushed on the tours themselves; considering how much time is spent preparing and getting to these sites.
