30 odd years ago, an organised bus tour took me through the Black Forest, autumn leaves starting to turn. I knew I had to return and explore this unique landscape further.
Research discovered the Black Forest falls into North & South, and as I was staying in Strasbourg, the Colmar Districts on the French side also appealed.
A once around the usual car rental companies had me wanting a Luxury automatic car, but no automatics were available, so I settled for an Audi A4 Berline manual from Europcar. Very pleasant.
With my gps programmed, and dashcam mount set for my phone, I scraped the ice off the car and headed off.
Day 1. I headed down the A35 and climbed the mountains heading to La Bresse from Ribeauville, passing the beginnings of snow being made and captured for local ski fields. Returning from La Bresse, I wanted to continue south on D148, but the road was closed due to ice; requiring a turn around and re-trace to venture into little Venice of Colmar before making my way home for the night.
Here’s a glimpse of the day behind the wheel in the beautiful French Colmar Districts. More below this small gallery.
Day 2 headed down to Totdnau in the southern Black Forest via Kniebis & Schluchsee, before turning back north and returning to Strasbourg on the busy A5 autobahn.
Day 3 was a drive along the famous B500 from Kniebis to Baden Baden with the intention to stop a few hours for a Spa day. Return down the A5 had me following a Porsche, climbing to over 200kph in the Audi. A surreal experience, as the roads are so well maintained and constructed, (as was the car) that I really didn’t feel that speed sensation.
Firstly, here is a section of the famous B500 road from Kniebis to Baden Baden.
and then here is a collection of photo’s from the balance of the Black Forest. A truly enjoyable experience.
